Gangbuk K-Pop Itinerary Day 4: Hongdae Busking, YG's New HQ & a Free Music Bank Ticket
Hongdae's K-pop cover-dance busking scene, YG Entertainment's new Hapjeong headquarters, and step-by-step instructions for a free Music Bank audience ticket.
Gangbuk Day 4 pairs Hongdae’s street-performance culture with YG Entertainment’s new headquarters in nearby Hapjeong. As a bonus, this entry also covers how to get a completely free ticket to a live music show. This is a route that rewards visiting on a weekend.
Why this route
Hongdae has a long history with indie bands and busking, but in recent years K-pop cover-dance teams have become regular fixtures of that same street-performance scene — local events like “K-Pop Week in Hongdae” have even booked dance busking as an official program. Exactly which teams show up and when varies week to week, but walking through Hongdae’s main pedestrian street on a weekend afternoon gives you decent odds of catching a cover-dance set. A short walk away in Hapjeong is YG Entertainment’s new headquarters, which lets you contrast Hongdae’s freewheeling street culture with a major agency’s actual building in a single day.
Full itinerary
- Hongik University Station — Hongdae Walking Street busking
- Walk around Hongdae Playground
- Hapjeong Station — YG Entertainment HQ exterior
- Cafe crawl between Hapjeong and Hongdae
- Dinner in Hongdae
Getting there
Hongik University Station and Hapjeong Station are one stop apart on Line 2, making this an easy day. It’s about a 20-minute walk from Hongdae’s busking area to the YG headquarters in Hapjeong, so if the weather’s good, walking the whole route is a fine option too.
Admission fees & hours
- Hongdae busking: Free to watch, no reservation or ticket required. Set times aren’t fixed and vary week to week, so checking on-site or following relevant social accounts ahead of time helps avoid a wasted trip.
- YG Entertainment headquarters: Located at 3 Huiujeong-ro 1-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Hapjeong Station Exit 8. It’s a working office, not a space open for public tours, so this is really an exterior-photo stop.
Food, cafes & snacks
Hongdae’s youth-oriented commercial district is dense with cheap, distinctive restaurants and cafes. Street food, Korean barbecue, izakaya, and brunch cafes all fit whatever budget and mood you’re in, and Hapjeong tends to have a calmer set of cafes and bakeries once you cross over. For snacks, Hongdae Walking Street’s street food stalls are the obvious pick, and the pojangmacha and bar alleys tucked into Hongdae’s side streets are a good way to close out the evening.
Tips
- Skipping the wait for busking: Popular teams draw a crowd fast enough that you can end up stuck at the back. Getting to a spot early before a set starts, or watching a lesser-known team instead, both work fine.
- YG HQ photo etiquette: The area in front of the building is a regular public street, so lingering too long for photos can get in the way of foot traffic. A quick photo and moving on is the considerate way to visit.
- Bonus tip — how to get a free music show ticket: A short trip from Hongdae/Hapjeong, KBS in Yeouido broadcasts Music Bank every Friday. Log into the KBS official website (Naver, Kakao, and Facebook login are all supported), then apply for an audience ticket under the viewer participation menu. Applications typically open the Thursday before broadcast at 9am and close that Friday at midnight. Tickets are free, capped at two per person, and you need to be 15 or older to attend. Given how many people apply, submitting your request the moment the window opens gives you the best odds.
This is the itinerary in the whole series that costs the least money while still putting you the closest to actual K-pop performance culture. Busking and HQ visits both involve some luck, but that unpredictability is also where the best unplanned moments tend to happen. If your Music Bank application comes through, you’ll go from street performances to an actual broadcast stage in a single day. Next up, and last in the series: hanbok, free palace entry, and Ikseon-dong’s hanok cafes.
